- Join a Patient Access team that plays an important role in keeping Starr Regional connected and supporting patients, visitors, and hospital staff throughout the day. This PRN position offers variety across switchboard, patient registration, and administrative support and is a great fit for someone who is dependable, flexible, and thrives while balancing both fast-paced periods and independent work.
Responsibilities
- Operates the hospital PBX/switchboard, answering and routing incoming calls accurately and professionally.
- Pages hospital staff and communicates announcements according to established hospital procedures and paging protocols.
- Announces emergency codes and prioritizes urgent communications while remaining calm, accurate, and professional.
- Provides information and assistance to hospital visitors, patients, callers, staff, and other customers.
- Performs patient check-in/registration support for services including Medical Records, MRI, echocardiograms, and stress tests.
- Provides scheduled relief coverage for Emergency Department registration as needed.
- Supports administrative functions including processing reports, handling mail during day shifts, and providing clerical support to the Financial Director.
- Utilizes telephone, computer, scanner, and applicable registration systems/equipment to complete daily responsibilities.
- Provides PBX/switchboard coverage primarily at the Athens campus, with coverage at the Etowah campus as departmental needs require.
- Maintains accuracy and professionalism while managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment, particularly during high-volume daytime hours.
- Works independently and appropriately prioritizes emergency communications, patient needs, incoming calls, and routine requests.
- Provides PRN coverage for PTO, call-outs, vacancies, holidays, and other departmental staffing needs.
- Performs other duties as assigned to support Patient Access and hospital operations.
Requirements
- Applicants should have a high school diploma or equivalent, required. Additional requirements include:
- Customer service experience, particularly in a high-volume or fast-paced environment, strongly preferred.
- Previous clerical, PBX/switchboard, call center, dispatch, reception, hospital, or similar customer-facing experience preferred but not required.
- Must demonstrate strong customer service skills and the ability to remain calm and professional under pressure.
- Ability to multitask, prioritize competing responsibilities, and maintain accuracy in a busy environment.
- Professional telephone etiquette and effective verbal communication skills.
- Dependable, attentive, flexible, and comfortable working independently.
- Ability to learn PBX procedures, hospital emergency codes, paging protocols, and applicable patient registration processes.
- Basic ability to operate computers, telephones, scanners, and related office equipment.
- Must have flexibility to work varying shifts based on departmental coverage needs, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Weekend and holiday availability is expected.
- Must be able to provide coverage with limited notice when unexpected absences or immediate staffing needs occur.
- Ability to work primarily at the Athens campus and provide coverage at the Etowah switchboard as needed.
