- LMI is seeking a Human-Centered Design (HCD) Specialist III-IV - UI/UX to support the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) portfolio. This role will focus on creating intuitive, accessible, visually cohesive, and user-centered digital experiences based on stakeholder research and user needs.
- The successful candidate will bring a strong background in user experience and user interface design, with demonstrated ability to translate research findings, workflows, and requirements into high-quality digital experiences. This individual will create user flows, wireframes, prototypes, interaction patterns, interface designs, and reusable design components that guide development teams from concept through implementation.
- The role will work across the HCD lifecycle, including discovery, stakeholder engagement, design, prototyping, usability testing, and iteration. Compared with a technically oriented HCD role, this position will place greater emphasis on interaction design, visual hierarchy, interface behavior, usability, design systems, and the quality and consistency of the overall user experience.

Responsibilities
- UI/UX and Product Design
- Design intuitive, effective, and visually cohesive user experiences for digital products supporting VA programs and stakeholders.
- Translate research findings, business requirements, user needs, and technical requirements into clear design concepts.
- Develop user flows, task flows, information architectures, navigation models, wireframes, interface designs, and interactive prototypes.
- Create low- through high-fidelity designs that enable stakeholders to experience and evaluate concepts before development.
- Design interface components, interaction patterns, layouts, forms, dashboards, workflows, and data-rich experiences.
- Establish and apply consistent visual and interaction patterns across digital products.
- Contribute to design systems, component libraries, UX standards, and reusable design assets where appropriate.
- Prepare clear developer handoff documentation and collaborate with technical teams during implementation.
- Participate in design reviews and provide design guidance as solutions move from prototype through development.
- HCD Research and Discovery
- Conduct stakeholder interviews, user interviews, workshops, usability studies, and other HCD discovery activities.
- Help stakeholders articulate user goals, needs, frustrations, behaviors, workflows, and desired outcomes.
- Synthesize qualitative research into findings, themes, personas, user journeys, experience maps, design principles, and recommendations.
- Connect research findings directly to UI/UX design decisions.
- Develop and test design hypotheses through prototypes and iterative user feedback.
- Facilitate usability testing and translate test results into prioritized design improvements.
- Accessibility and Inclusive Design
- Apply Section 508, WCAG, and inclusive-design requirements to digital experiences.
- Design for users with different abilities, levels of digital proficiency, roles, and operating environments.
- Incorporate accessibility considerations into navigation, forms, visual hierarchy, content presentation, interaction patterns, and prototypes.
- Collaborate with technical teams to address accessibility early rather than treating compliance as a final-stage review.
- Magnify Reports and HCD Deliverables
- Support development of Magnify Reports, the formal HCD deliverable associated with each SBIR contract.
- Provide research findings, personas, journey maps, visualizations, prototype concepts, user feedback, and design recommendations for inclusion in formal HCD documentation.
- Develop polished visual artifacts and presentations to communicate findings and proposed experiences to client and internal stakeholders.
- Clearly document design rationale and trace significant design decisions back to user research or validated requirements.
- Stakeholder and Team Collaboration
- Facilitate design sessions, co-design workshops, prototype reviews, and usability-testing sessions.
- Present design concepts and explain design decisions to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Collaborate closely with HCD researchers, technical designers, developers, analysts, product owners, healthcare subject matter experts, and program leadership.
- Balance user needs, business requirements, accessibility considerations, and technical constraints when developing solutions.
- Participate in Agile ceremonies and integrate UX activities into iterative delivery cycles.
- Participate actively in LMI's HCD community of practice by sharing tools, templates, patterns, techniques, and lessons learned.
Requirements
- Required
- Bachelor's degree in Human-Centered Design, User Experience Design, Interaction Design, Graphic Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Information Design, Psychology, or a related field.
- 5-7+ years of professional experience in UI/UX, product design, HCD, interaction design, or a related discipline.
- Demonstrated experience designing digital products from early concept through prototype and development handoff.
- Strong proficiency with Figma or comparable modern UI/UX design and prototyping tools.
- Demonstrated experience developing user flows, wireframes, interactive prototypes, and polished interface designs.
- Strong understanding of information architecture, interaction design, visual hierarchy, usability, and user-centered design principles.
- Experience conducting or participating in user research and usability testing.
- Ability to translate research findings and complex requirements into intuitive user experiences.
- Knowledge of Section 508, WCAG, accessibility, and inclusive-design practices.
- Strong written, verbal, presentation, and facilitation skills.
- Ability to independently organize and prioritize design work across multiple activities.
- Ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.
- Master's degree in Human-Centered Design, Human-Computer Interaction, UX Design, Interaction Design, or a related field.
- Portfolio demonstrating UI/UX design, research-informed design decisions, user flows, wireframes, prototypes, design systems, or shipped digital experiences.
- Experience designing for federal government, healthcare, public-sector, or enterprise environments.
- Prior experience supporting VA or VHA programs.
- Experience designing dashboards, complex workflows, enterprise applications, or data-rich experiences.
- Experience creating or contributing to design systems and reusable component libraries.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Power Platform, SharePoint, Power BI, or Microsoft 365 environments.
- Experience with Agile, Lean UX, Design Thinking, or iterative product development.
- Relevant UX, accessibility, HCD, or Agile certifications.

- Target salary range: $100,000 - $130,000.
