• This position is responsible for the accurate cession processing, accounting, and administration of Markel’s reinsurance portfolio, as well as the systematic enhancement of reinsurance processes. This position is part of the Ceded Close & Regulatory department within Markel’s Finance group and reports to the Manager, Ceded Close & Regulatory.

Responsibilities

• Own the accuracy and completeness of monthly reinsurance cessions, including system-generated and manually booked cessions.
• Participate in ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of monthly and quarterly accounting functions, including cession analysis and complex manual reinsurance calculations.
• Prepare and upload general ledger and data warehouse entries, including adjusting journal entries, and support monthly general ledger close and reporting deliverables.
• Perform monthly reinsurance balance sheet account reconciliations, including identification and remediation of issues in compliance with SOX control and audit requirements.
• Prepare monthly and quarterly financial reporting and variance analysis packages.
• Understand reinsurance treaty contract language pertaining to accounting and contractual requirements, as applicable.
• Ensure effective SOX controls are maintained and followed, and maintain adherence to department processes and procedures.
• Assist with internal and external audit reviews, as needed.
• Work closely with Reinsurance Operations and other functional areas, including Global Ceded Re, Actuarial, Underwriting, Claims, IT, Finance, and Close Control & Reporting, to resolve issues and support achievement of business goals.
• Lead or assist with special projects, system enhancements, systems integration, testing, data pulls, and ad hoc reporting requests, as needed.
• Collaborate with teammates and management to identify, design, and implement systematic process improvements for greater efficiency, effectiveness, execution, and analysis.
• Participate in other strategic accounting and business projects as they arise.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a similar field required.
• 1+ years of relevant experience.
• Experience in the insurance and/or reinsurance industry preferred.
• Strong computer skills, including a high degree of proficiency in Excel.
• High degree of flexibility and responsiveness to change in a fast-paced environment.
• Detail-oriented, with strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks independently and simultaneously under tight deadlines.
• Demonstrated personal accountability and ownership when responding to challenging work and deadlines.
• Strong research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• Energetic, interactive, reliable, and respectful team player.
• Experience with Oracle and Smart View applications preferred.
• Experience with Alteryx, Power BI, and SQL preferred.
• Experience with AI tools, such as Microsoft Copilot and Claude, preferred.

• The salary range for this position is $62,400 - $107,250. The posted salary range reflects the lowest and highest base salary applicable to this role across our U.S. locations. Individual offers are determined based on geographic location, experience, qualifications, internal equity, and other job-related factors. As a result, the salary offered for a specific location will fall within a narrower range than the overall range displayed in this posting. This position may also be eligible to participate in the Company's annual incentive plan.
