Medical Director of the Emergency Department at BMC in Boston

Job description

• As an integrated health system, BMCHS provides emergency care across three emergency departments: BMC Main, BMC South, and BMC Brighton. We are seeking an experienced physician leader interested in advancing clinical operations, patient flow, quality, and the delivery of emergency care within our integrated Department of Emergency Medicine.
• The Emergency Department Medical Director is responsible for the daily clinical and operational leadership of an Emergency Department. The Medical Director works collaboratively with departmental, nursing, APP, quality and patient safety, residency, and hospital leadership to ensure that the ED care delivery model provides high-quality, efficient, patient-centered emergency care and continues to evolve to meet the needs of our patients, staff, hospitals, and communities.

Responsibilities

• • Lead the daily clinical and operational performance of the Emergency Department.
• • Design and implement process-improvement strategies to optimize patient flow, care delivery, and operational efficiency.
• • Monitor, analyze, and improve key ED performance metrics, including door-to-clinician time, emergency department length of stay, and left-without-being-seen (LWBS) rates.
• • Develop, maintain, update, and implement departmental policies, procedures, protocols, and clinical workflows.
• • Ensure appropriate orientation, onboarding, and ongoing training of clinicians in accordance with hospital policies and departmental needs.
• • Partner with departmental leadership in the staffing of physicians and advanced practice providers (APPs) to meet clinical and operational needs.
• • Partner with departmental leaders to advance quality, patient safety, patient experience, and performance-improvement efforts.
• • Collaborate with nursing, hospital, and health system leadership on disaster preparedness, mass casualty response, and emergency management planning.
• • Participate in the leadership on-call schedule as required to provide operational and clinical leadership support and ensure continuous departmental oversight.
• • Collaborate with Emergency Medicine leadership to support the development, implementation, and alignment of system-wide clinical and operational initiatives across BMCHS.
• • Lead or support initiatives as directed by Department leadership

Requirements

• MD or DO degree.
• Completion of an ACGME-approved Emergency Medicine residency. ABEM/AOBEM board certified or board eligible in Emergency Medicine. Eligible for Massachusetts medical licensure and clinical privileges in Emergency Medicine within Boston Medical Center Health System. Demonstrated leadership experience in Emergency Department clinical operations, administration, quality, or performance improvement.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaborative leadership skills, with the ability to work effectively across disciplines and within a complex health system.
• Academic and/or operational leadership experience is preferred.
