Responsibilities

• Product & Technology - Software Engineering & IT develops and maintains Telstra's software and IT systems, working on some really cutting-edge technologies.
• As the Senior Software Engineer, you will use your advanced software engineering knowledge to deliver complex application capabilities and improve the health of Telstra's many digital assets. You will translate customer and business needs into maintainable technical solutions, contributes to architectural decisions, champion quality and security, and supports software across the full development lifecycle. Working in a team that works directly on the Telstra Self Service App and many other B2B customer applications, you will identify areas of improvement while being forward thinking demonstrating your ability to identify improvement areas and facilitate solutions.
• Design, build and maintain scalable backend services, APIs and event-driven solutions using modern engineering practices and Domain-Driven Design principles.
• Deliver secure, reliable and high-quality software through automated testing, CI/CD, observability and performance-focused engineering standards.
• Diagnose and resolve complex production, integration and performance issues using logging, tracing, metrics and debugging tools.
• Own solutions end-to-end, from technical design and development through to deployment, production support and continuous improvement.
• Collaborate with Product, Architecture, Security and Platform teams to deliver business outcomes and influence technical direction.
• Provide technical leadership through mentoring, stakeholder engagement, knowledge sharing and driving engineering excellence across teams.

Requirements

• You have strong Full-Stack Software development technology experience with a priority focus on Backend delivery. Combined with excellent stakeholder management, engagement and presentation skills, you thrive in a role that is autonomous yet collaborative while working in an Agile team embedded in CI/CD best practice. You understand customer needs and use this knowledge to advise development teams and product Managers on best engineering solutions in line with Tech capabilities and ability to manage multiple sprint priorities as required.
• Advanced backend engineering expertise across Java, Kotlin, Node.js, REST APIs, microservices and Domain-Driven Design, with the ability to build scalable, resilient and high-performing solutions.
• Strong experience designing cloud-native architectures using AWS, Azure, Docker and Kubernetes, with end-to-end ownership of services in production environments.
• Deep knowledge of event-driven architecture, including Kafka, Redis Streams, enterprise messaging patterns and asynchronous processing at scale.
• Secure, reliable and quality-focused delivery through automated testing, CI/CD, observability, performance tuning and modern software engineering practices.
• Proven use of AI-assisted engineering tools, including GitHub Copilot, to accelerate development while maintaining strong security, governance and engineering standards.
• Technical leadership, sound engineering judgement and strong communication skills, with experience mentoring engineers, influencing stakeholders and driving continuous improvement across teams.
• Cloud, security, API, AI or Agile certifications with a commitment to continuous learning.
• Experience developing frontend applications using React.js or similar frameworks
• Hands-on experience with AWS serverless platforms, modern backend frameworks and enterprise API management tools.
• Strong understanding of AI model selection, token optimisation and cost-effective AI solution design.
• Experience building AI agents, leveraging GitHub Copilot and applying emerging AI technologies, including RAG and agentic patterns.
