Senior Environmental Consultant: Regulatory Compliance & Due Diligence at EHS Support in Albany, NY

Job description

• The Senior Environmental Consultant: Regulatory Compliance & Due Diligence will serve as a key technical and client-facing practitioner supporting environmental due diligence, regulatory compliance, and site assessment projects throughout New York and the Northeast.
• This position is ideal for a mid- to senior-level environmental professional who combines strong technical expertise with the ability to develop trusted client relationships, identify and pursue new opportunities, scope and price projects, and oversee high-quality project execution.
• The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience with environmental due diligence, Phase I Environmental Site Assessments, Phase II Site Investigation scoping and implementation, along with a strong working knowledge of federal and New York environmental regulations along with experience in helping businesses comply with same. The role will work closely with EHS Support's technical teams to develop practical, risk-based solutions for clients across industrial, commercial, real estate, and other market sectors.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain strong relationships with existing and prospective clients, serving as a trusted advisor on environmental compliance, due diligence, and site assessment matters.
• Identify and develop new business opportunities and support the continued growth of EHS Support's environmental consulting services throughout New York and the Northeast.
• Lead proposal development, project scoping, budgeting, scheduling, and contract coordination for environmental due diligence and regulatory compliance projects.
• Lead and/or provide senior technical oversight for Phase II Environmental Site Assessments and other subsurface investigations, including development of sampling strategies, work plans, and investigation scopes.
• Evaluate environmental conditions and recognized environmental concerns associated with commercial and industrial properties, acquisitions, divestitures, redevelopment, and other transactions.
• Oversee soil, groundwater, soil vapor, indoor air, and other environmental sampling programs, as applicable to project objectives.
• Interpret analytical and field data to evaluate potential releases, contaminant sources, migration pathways, environmental liabilities, and the need for additional investigation or corrective action.
• Provide technical oversight and quality review of environmental reports, investigation findings, regulatory submittals, and client deliverables.
• Support clients in evaluating environmental risks and liabilities associated with property and corporate transactions.
• Conduct and/or oversee environmental regulatory compliance assessments and audits for industrial and commercial facilities.
• Evaluate facility compliance with applicable federal, state, and local environmental requirements, including requirements related to hazardous materials and waste, petroleum and chemical storage, spill prevention, air, wastewater, stormwater, and other applicable environmental programs.
• Develop practical recommendations and corrective action strategies to address identified compliance gaps and environmental risks.
• Support projects involving New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) requirements and programs, including spill response, site investigation, remediation, and brownfield-related activities, as applicable.
• Coordinate with clients, attorneys, property owners, laboratories, drilling contractors, subcontractors, and regulatory agencies throughout project execution.
• Manage project financial performance, including budgets, schedules, subcontractor costs, invoicing, and scope changes.
• Direct and mentor junior and mid-level technical staff and provide clear expectations for project execution and deliverable quality.
• Collaborate across EHS Support service lines to connect clients with additional technical expertise and develop integrated solutions.
• Maintain awareness of evolving federal, New York State, and local environmental regulations and advise clients on potential impacts to their operations and properties.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in environmental science, geology, environmental engineering, hydrogeology, chemistry, or a related scientific or engineering discipline. Advanced degree preferred but not required.
• Approximately 7-15+ years of environmental consulting experience, with flexibility based on the depth and relevance of the candidate's technical and client-facing experience.
• Demonstrated experience conducting, managing, and/or providing senior technical oversight of Phase II Environmental Site Assessments and subsurface environmental investigations.
• Strong understanding of environmental due diligence and the relationship between environmental investigation findings, regulatory requirements, and client business risk.
• Knowledge of ASTM environmental due diligence practices, particularly ASTM E1527 and ASTM E1903.
• Experience developing Phase II scopes of work based on recognized environmental conditions, site history, conceptual site models, potential contaminant pathways, and client objectives.
• Experience overseeing soil, groundwater, and/or vapor investigations, including drilling, monitoring well installation, environmental sampling, laboratory coordination, QA/QC, and interpretation of analytical data.
• Working knowledge of common environmental contaminants, including petroleum hydrocarbons, VOCs, SVOCs, metals, PCBs, and other contaminants associated with commercial and industrial properties.
• Strong working knowledge of federal and New York State environmental regulations and regulatory programs.
• Experience with NYSDEC requirements and guidance related to site investigation, spills, remediation, brownfields, and/or contaminated property management strongly preferred.
• Experience conducting environmental regulatory compliance audits or assessments for industrial and commercial facilities.
• Familiarity with applicable regulatory programs such as RCRA, CERCLA, EPCRA, SPCC, Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, hazardous materials/waste management, stormwater, and petroleum/chemical storage requirements.
• Demonstrated ability to independently develop project scopes, level-of-effort estimates, budgets, schedules, and proposals.
• Proven client relationship management skills with the ability to understand client business objectives and translate technical environmental issues into clear, practical recommendations.
• Demonstrated experience supporting business development, generating repeat work, expanding existing client relationships, and/or developing new client opportunities.
• Experience managing multidisciplinary project teams, field staff, laboratories, drilling contractors, and other subcontractors.
• Ability to effectively manage multiple projects, priorities, budgets, and deadlines.
• Strong technical writing, data interpretation, and report review skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex environmental issues to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a collaborative, remote consulting environment.
• Professional Geologist (PG) or Professional Engineer (PE) licensure is preferred but not required.
• Current 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification preferred.
• Ability and willingness to travel to client and project sites throughout New York and the Northeast as needed.
