External Communications Manager, Workplace PR at Google in Mountain View, CA, USA

Job description

• As a member of the Global Communications and Public Affairs team, you will work cross-functionally to help communicate with journalists and other thought leaders; devise specific communications materials and campaigns; engage in face-to-face meetings with commentators and other opinion formers; and develop print and web-based material supporting these campaigns. We're looking for great communicators who can understand complex issues and explain them in person and also via well written, simple blog posts, FAQs, video scripts and more.
• As the External Communications Manager for Workplace PR (Public Relations), you will play a pivotal, strategic role in shaping and safeguarding Google’s narrative on key workforce and organizational initiatives. You will partner closely with executive leadership across People Operations (POps), Employment Legal, and Extended Workforce Solutions (xWS) to manage complex issues, navigate sensitive crises, and lead proactive external communications that protect and elevate Google’s global brand and reputation. We're looking for an experienced, media-savvy communications strategist who works well under pressure, can navigate complex issues, and serves as a trusted advisor to executive leaders.

Responsibilities

• Lead, plan and operationalize PR strategies for significant POps policy or program changes, and sensitive employment matters, in direct partnership with the relevant leadership teams.
• Execute the external strategy for the Chief People Officer and her immediate leadership team.
• Develop high-quality, clear, accessible communication materials (e.g., talking points, external statements, FAQs, and more) for executives and managers across the company to educate and enable them to address a variety of People-focused topics.
• Identify opportunities and challenges related to external strategy and communication across xWS areas, devise recommendations, and execute on recommended plans.
• Build and maintain relationships with Google beat reporters and key workplace reporters to influence stories and defend Google’s brand. Manage tricky news cycles about People issues at Google, including setting internal expectations.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
• 10 years of experience in external, internal or executive communications.
• Experience working with media and press, including proactive and reactive.
• Experience devising communication strategy and providing communications guidance and support to executive leaders (Director level and above).
• Demonstrated ability to prioritize, plan and execute on multiple projects simultaneously in an organized fashion.
• Demonstrated ability to work calmly and maintain good judgment in fast-moving environments.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a demonstrated ability to communicate complex concepts concisely.

• Individual pay is determined by factors including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
• US: $171000 - $247000 (USD) + 20% bonus target + equity + benefits
