- Position Summary: The Assistant Director of Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A) leads the hospital’s budgeting, forecasting, financial analytics, and decision support functions. Reporting to the Director of Accounting/Finance, this role provides strategic financial insight to executive leadership and operational departments to drive informed decision-making and organizational performance. This position directly oversees the Financial Planning, Analysis and Decision Support Team, ensuring alignment of financial reporting, budgeting, cost accounting, service line analytics, and strategic modeling activities across the organization.
Responsibilities
- Financial Planning & Budgeting Leadership
- Lead the annual operating and capital budget development process across all departments.
- Develop and maintain structured budgeting timelines, tools, and guidance for department leaders.
- Consolidate departmental budgets into organization-wide financial plans.
- Lead long-range financial planning and multi-year forecasting initiatives.
- Forecasting & Financial Analysis
- Develop and maintain rolling forecasts, including volume, revenue, expense, and cash flow projections.
- Analyze monthly financial performance compared to budget and forecast; identify key drivers, risks, and trends.
- Prepare executive-level variance analysis and financial summaries.
- Conduct scenario modeling and sensitivity analyses to support strategic decision-making.
- Decision Support & Cost Analytics Oversight
- Directly oversee cost accounting, service line profitability analysis, and performance analytics functions.
- Ensure integrity and consistency of cost allocation methodologies and financial data used for operational decision-making.
- Support development and maintenance of service line reporting, contribution margin analysis, and productivity metrics.
- Partner with clinical and operational leadership to evaluate program performance and identify improvement opportunities.
- Oversee financial analysis related to new services, capital investments, and strategic growth initiatives
- Strategic & Operational Partnership
- Provide financial guidance to senior leadership and department heads to support performance improvement and cost containment initiatives.
- Support payer contract modeling and reimbursement impact analysis in collaboration with accounting and revenue cycle teams.
- Develop and maintain financial dashboards and key performance indicators (KPIs) for leadership review.
- Ensure alignment between financial planning assumptions and actual financial reporting.
- Leadership & Team Development
- Provide direct supervision, coaching, and performance management for Financial Planning, Analysis and Decision Support staff.
- Establish accountability, analytical rigor, and continuous improvement within the planning and analytics functions.
- Ensure appropriate workload distribution, cross-training, and operational continuity.
- Lead system enhancements and process improvements within budgeting, forecasting, and decision support systems.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Healthcare Administration, or related field required.
- Master’s degree (MBA, MHA, or related field) preferred.
- CPA, CMA, or other relevant certification preferred.
- 5–7 years of progressive experience in financial planning, budgeting, decision support, or healthcare financial analysis.
- Healthcare or hospital finance experience strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated leadership of organization-wide budget processes and financial analytics teams.
- Supervisory experience required.
- Strong financial modeling, forecasting, and analytical expertise.
- Solid understanding of cost accounting, service line profitability, and healthcare reimbursement methodologies.
- Advanced proficiency in Excel and financial analytics systems.
- Ability to translate complex financial data into actionable insights for operational leaders.
- Strong presentation and executive communication skills.
- Strategic thinking combined with strong operational understanding.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced healthcare environment
