Job description

• Nuro operates real self-driving vehicles on public roads today — not a research platform, not ADAS. The Embedded Software Engineering team builds the software for the safety-critical embedded controllers that connect the Nuro Driver™ to the vehicle: the devices that command steering, braking, and propulsion, alongside other vehicle actuators, distribute and monitor power, monitor vehicle motion, and bring the vehicle to a safe state when something goes wrong.
• As an Embedded Software Engineer, you will work across the full stack of multicore automotive microcontrollers from RTOS, drivers, and scheduler up through middleware and application components that talk to the vehicle, and help extend that stack as our hardware evolves. You will bring the Nuro Driver™ up on new vehicle platforms alongside OEM and supplier engineers, and see your code drive real vehicles on public roads. We're hiring across levels, from engineers with a couple years of embedded experience to those who've shipped a production automotive launch.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement and test embedded C software for safety-critical multicore automotive microcontrollers, spanning base software such as RTOS, device drivers, scheduling and bootloader, middleware such as inter-component messaging and end-to-end protection, and application components such as actuator interface, body controls, power management and fault management.
• Integrate the Nuro Driver™ with new vehicle platforms: define and implement CAN and Ethernet interfaces with OEM ECUs, adapt actuator and body-control interfaces, and validate them on bench and in vehicle.
• Take part in hands-on device and vehicle bring-up, prototyping and debugging on multiple vehicle platforms, from first power-on to autonomous driving.
• Build and maintain the team's verification infrastructure: unit tests, hardware-in-the-loop benches and vehicle test procedures.
• Work within an ISO 26262 development process: define software requirements from system safety requirements, then implement and verify them with full traceability.
• Collaborate daily with systems, safety, hardware, controls and autonomy engineers, and with OEM and supplier partners, from definition through verification.

Requirements

• B.S. or higher in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a closely related field.
• 2+ years of industry experience developing embedded software in C, including work on a real-time operating system.
• Solid computer science fundamentals: data structures, concurrency and algorithm design.
• Working knowledge of microcontroller internals and peripherals, with depth in at least one of device driver development, CAN or automotive Ethernet, bootloaders and software update, embedded security, or vehicle-level integration and test.
• Strong problem-solving and debugging skills, clear written and spoken communication, and a track record of working well with engineers from other disciplines.
• Comfortable at the bench with debug probes, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers and CAN tools. You enjoy finding out why hardware and software disagree.
• 3+ years of embedded development in the automotive or autonomous vehicle industry, including a production launch.
• Hands-on functional safety experience with ISO 26262, or safety-critical development in another regulated industry such as DO-178C or IEC 62304.
• Experience with Infineon AURIX TC3xx, SafeRTOS or FreeRTOS, or AUTOSAR Classic base software such as MCAL and communication stacks.
• Vehicle network integration experience: DBC and ARXML, UDS diagnostics, E2E protection, time synchronization.
• Knowledge of vehicle functions, vehicle dynamics or control theory.

Benefits

• At Nuro, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. For this position, the reasonably expected base pay range is between $145,830 and $219,000 for the level at which this job has been scoped. Your base pay will depend on several factors, including your experience, qualifications, education, location, and skills. In the event that you are considered for a different level, a higher or lower pay range would apply. This position is also eligible for an annual performance bonus, equity, and a competitive benefits package.
