Software Engineer – Backend (Java) at NielsenIQ in Chennai, TN, India

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain backend applications using Java and related frameworks.
• Write clean, readable, and maintainable code following established coding standards and best practices.
• Implement well-defined features and enhancements based on functional and technical requirements with guidance from senior engineers.
• Develop and consume RESTful APIs, understanding basic client-server communication and HTTP concepts.
• Collaborate with product, QA, and engineering teams to deliver high-quality software solutions.
• Participate in code reviews and learn modern software engineering practices.
• Write and execute unit tests to ensure application quality and reliability.
• Work with relational databases to create and optimize basic SQL queries and data access components.
• Debug and resolve application issues using logs, debugging tools, and structured troubleshooting approaches.
• Use version control systems such as Git for source code management, branching, and collaboration.
• Work within existing CI/CD pipelines for building, testing, and deploying applications.
• Leverage AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot to improve productivity and code quality.
• Continuously learn modern technologies, frameworks, cloud concepts, and engineering best practices.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
• Proficiency in at least one programming language, preferably Java.
• Strong understanding of object-oriented programming (OOP) concepts, including encapsulation, inheritance, and polymorphism.
• Understanding of fundamental data structures such as arrays, linked lists, stacks, queues, and hash maps.
• Knowledge of basic algorithms, including sorting, searching, and recursion.
• Familiarity with Java fundamentals, exception handling, collections, and multithreading concepts.
• Understanding of REST APIs, HTTP methods, and client-server architecture.
• Basic knowledge of relational databases and SQL.
• Familiarity with version control systems such as Git.
• Understanding of software development lifecycle (SDLC) concepts.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Eagerness to learn new technologies and work in a collaborative team environment.
