Job description

• The Interim Medical Director oversees the delivery of healthcare services to undergraduate, graduate, and law students of American University handling approximately 12,000 visits per year.
• The Interim Medical Director of the Student Health Center leads the strategic planning, implementation, and delivery of healthcare services to American University students.
• The Interim Medical Director develops policies and procedures in accordance with District of Columbia and federal regulations to assure a safe and effective campus health program; works collaboratively with campus partners and local public health authorities to manage campus health epidemics and to enhance departmental operations that support student health needs; develops and monitors budgets; oversees the Student Health Insurance Plan; serves as a resource for the campus community on issues of health promotion, disease prevention, safety, and health advocacy; monitors and assesses the effectiveness of programs and services; and manages staff.
• The Interim Medical Director ensures that the Center follows the guidelines and standards established by the AAAHC accreditation body to maintain its accreditation, and benchmarks with college health colleagues to ensure best practice service delivery.
• The Interim Medical Director acts as a clinical expert and role model for clinical staff and clinical supervision over the advanced practice clinicians.
• The Interim Medical Director oversees eight clinical staff and four administrative staff and manages an annual budget of $1.2 million including $350,000 in revenue targets. The Interim Medical Director also oversees a $5 million Student Health Insurance Plan.

Responsibilities

• 1.) Administrative and Clinical Leadership
• Develop, implement, and evaluate Center’s policies and procedures.
• Oversee the Associate Director of Administrative Services’ negotiation, administration, and management of the Student Health Insurance Program in consultation with Risk Management, Procurement, and the Division of Student Affairs.
• Provide preventive healthcare programs to the campus community and make appropriate referrals to off-campus resources.
• Facilitate workshops for new student orientation, resident assistants, student leaders, faculty, and staff.
• Develop budgets for Center that provide adequate breadth and depth of clinical care and outreach consultation and training; assure compliance with ACHA standards of care and AAAHC accreditation requirements.
• Interpret, implement, and monitor compliance with District of Columbia and federal laws related to healthcare delivery including medical staff credentialing, immunization requirements, reporting of epidemics/contagious diseases, and other public health matters; represent the university to the DC Department of Health, Centers for Disease Control and other external agencies.
• Alongside the Associate Medical Director, fully investigate all adverse incidents and take corrective action, as appropriate.
• Oversee clinical care including primary and psychiatric care, quality improvement, outreach and consultation, chart review, and risk management.
• Work closely with Risk Management to ensure full compliance with safety protocols, insurance mandates, hazardous waste disposal, and malpractice concerns.
• Promote and develop best clinical practices to meet the mission and vision of the Center and university whereby staff understand, comply, and support the vision through the development, interpretation, and execution of policies and procedures.
• Maintain the Center’s healthcare accreditation.
• Provide leadership in departmental strategic planning activities, program review activities, and assessment of learning outcomes.
• Identify quality improvement opportunities, service improvements, and emerging trends for clinical service delivery.
• Oversee medication dispensary and lab operations.
• Oversee the selection and administration of the student health insurance plan.
• 2.) Direct Patient Care
• Provides primary health care services within scope of practice available through the Student Health Center ensuring that care is appropriate to the age, culture, and individual needs of the patient.
• Obtains health histories and performs physical exams.
• Diagnoses and manages acute and chronic health conditions in partnership with the patient.
• Orders, conducts, and interprets diagnostic studies and lab tests.
• Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including suturing, wound care, incision and drainage, splinting, casting, biopsies, and cryotherapy.
• Prescribes and recommends pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies, including controlled medications, in accordance with applicable laws.
• Follows standard charting procedures as determined by clinic policy and participates in chart and peer review.
• Assures adequate follow-up.
• Teaches and counsels patients, as indicated.
• Promotes self-care through the provision of information, counseling, and education.
• Teaches health promotion, wellness, and disease prevention.
• 3.) Staff Management/Professional Development
• Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate direct reports.
• Actively engage in professional development activities and encourage professional development of Center staff.
• Contribute to the overall efforts of the Division of Student Affairs by establishing and maintaining partnerships with all areas of the division and by participating in project teams, events, and activities of the division. Encourage Center staff to participate in campus activities.
• 4.) Consultation/Advocacy
• Coordinate campus medical response in health and safety emergencies.
• Serve as a resource and consultant to the campus community on issues related to student health and healthcare delivery.
• Serves on the university’s Communicable Infectious Disease Response Team.
• Coordinate with campus partners including the Office of the Dean of Students, Center for Well-Being and Psychological Services, Housing and Residence Life, Academic Support and Access Center, Risk Management, Enrollment Management, New Student and Family Programs, Public Safety, Student Accounts, and other departments to address students’ comprehensive health and wellness needs.
• Serve on Division of Student Affairs and University committees including, but not limited to, the Care Team and Emergency Preparedness Committee.
• Serve as liaison to Student Government; respond to requests from student media in collaboration with University Communications and Marketing.
• Serve on Divisional Committees and provide leadership presence at university events such as Orientation, Commencement, Convocation and Family Weekend as requested.

Requirements

• M.D. or D.O.
• 8 - 10 years of relevant experience.
• Licensed physician (M.D. or D.O.) or license-eligible in the District of Columbia with unrestricted license to practice.
• Board-certified in internal medicine, family practice, adolescent medicine, or pediatrics.
• Possess and maintain a valid Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) certificate and number to prescribe medication and controlled substances.
• Substantive professional experience in clinical management, quality improvement, and supervision.
• Demonstrated expertise developing and implementing evidence-based programs to support healthcare delivery.
• Significant experience with FERPA and HIPAA compliance as well as advocacy for student healthcare needs.
• Proven ability to respond effectively to healthcare emergencies/epidemics and to work collaboratively with campus and community responders.
• Must have knowledge of primary and psychiatric care systems including best practice standards of care.
• Evidence of an effective leadership style and background demonstrating success in working with clinical staff, students, parents, administrators, faculty, and alumni.
• Ability to think strategically and proactively.
• Proven ability to work across organizational boundaries as an effective member of a team.
• Significant experience managing staff and budgets and experience supervising professional staff.
• Evidence of ability to plan and implement programs.
• Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to manage multiple, competing priorities; demonstrated computer proficiency including personal productivity software and electronic medical record systems; strong analytical skills; and excellent communication skills are required.
• Current knowledge of principles/practices of healthcare delivery including regulatory requirements and accreditation standards.
• Student service orientation with experience working with diverse populations including international students, LGBTQIA+ students, students with disabilities, veterans, and non-traditional students.
• Demonstrated skill in managing difficult situations involving students, parents, staff, faculty, and community agencies.
• Must have highest standards of integrity and ethics in both performance and behavior.
• Desire and appreciation for work in a diverse, fast-paced office environment.
