Job description
- The Illinois Department of Transportation seeks to hire an Employee Benefits Assistant for district 7. This position processes benefits transactions for all district 7 personnel. This position monitors insurance rules and regulations for state employees to ensure proper application for employees and reviews completed insurance and deferred compensation forms to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
- Under general direction, performs various complex, specialized paraprofessional human resources functions for district 7 including administering the district’s benefit program (e.g. health, life, and dental insurance, deferred compensation, flexible spending plans.
- Administers various seasonal/temporary employment programs (e.g., winter and summer, Construction, Technician Co-op program, etc.)
- Administers the district’s Veteran’s Affairs on-the-job training program.
- Assists district Federal and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) coordinator.
- Serves as a backup for processing claims and supports the Safety, Claims, and Training Manager in handling Workers' Compensation matters, including the processing of claims for Workers' Compensation benefits during the manager’s absence.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope for the duties enumerated above.
Requirements
- Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of two (2) years of college or satisfactory completion of an approved training program.
- Requires skill in keyboarding accurately at 30 wpm.
- Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties. Requires appropriate, valid driver’s license.
- Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be requested or required/mandated to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime. This may require the ability to work evenings and weekends.
- Requires completion of a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history.

- Prefers one (1) year of experience handling employees’ benefit transactions.
- Prefers one (1) year of experience facilitating pre-hire paperwork and assisting with new hire orientation.
- Prefers advanced skill in utilizing Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Prefers one (1) year of experience administering Federal and Medical Leave Act (FMLA).
