• Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories (MERL) invites qualified candidates to apply for the position of Research Scientist in the Multiphysical Systems Group. Current areas of interest include system level dynamic modeling, control, and state and parameter estimation for plasma-based processes. Successful candidates will be expected to perform original, relevant research in the areas of numerical analysis and simulation, control system design and development, and nonlinear and distributed state estimation for plasma systems.
• Using state-of-the-art languages, we construct system-level dynamic models and use them to design new estimation and control algorithms, analyze dynamic behaviors, optimize product performance, and prototype new products and services that are enabled by these tools and methods.
• Current research interests include optimization and estimation for large-scale, nonlinear system models, development of next-generation tools for scientific computing, and design and analysis of robust nonlinear controls and model predictive controls.
• Specific areas of interest are directed towards fundamental mathematical approaches for modeling and controlling low-temperature and/or high-temperature plasmas used in industrial processes, as well as state and parameter estimation methods for physics-based models comprised of hybrid (discrete and continuous state) nonlinear differential algebraic equations (DAEs) and partial differential equations (PDEs).
• The successful candidate will bring an independent research agenda and a track record commensurate with experience and be capable of working within interdisciplinary R&D teams.

Responsibilities

• Conducting innovative and relevant research on estimation and control for plasma-based processes
• Developing and advancing a research agenda impacting the scientific community and company technology
• Publishing results in leading technical journals and conferences, and drafting patent applications
• Partnering with business units, corporate R&D, and academic groups in the execution of R&D projects
• Transferring results and technology to Mitsubishi Electric corporate research laboratories

Requirements

• A Ph.D. or equivalent from an internationally recognized institution in applied mathematics, physics, chemical engineering, electrical engineering, or other related fields, with a focus on plasma systems
• Knowledge of modern methods for analysis, simulation, control, and estimation of large-scale multiphysical systems governed by PDEs and/or DAEs
• Strong programming skills, in at least some of Julia, Modelica, C/C++, Python, and Matlab
• A strong publication record in leading conferences and journals, consistent with experience
• A record for independently proposing and executing research programs with academic impact
• Strong teamwork, communication (oral and written), teaching, and listening skills

Specific details regarding participation in these programs will be provided upon an offer of employment.
• The pay range for this position at the commencement of employment is expected to be between $135,000 and $170,000 per year. Actual base pay will depend on a variety of individualized factors, including job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
