- PerkinElmer is seeking a Strategic Product Management Manager to serve as the full strategic and commercial owner of a product segment within one of its analytical instrument business units. This is a purpose-built strategic leadership role. Reporting to the VP Product Line, the Strategic PM holds end-to-end accountability for the product segment's roadmap, commercial positioning, pricing strategy, and P&L contribution.
- This role will fully manage the AA P&L to include strategic, NPI and operational areas to include strategy, Go-to-Market, value propositions and day-to-day portfolio execution — quality escalations, SKU management and supply chain issues.
Responsibilities
- Product Strategy & Roadmap
- Define and own the 3–5 year product roadmap for the assigned product segment — prioritisation, sequencing, and investment trade-off decisions across instruments, consumables, and software
- Develop rigorous NPI business cases: market sizing, competitive positioning, financial modelling, and customer value quantification — to a standard that supports VP and CTO gate approval
- Own gate progression for all NPIs within the segment from concept through commercial launch approval
- Translate Market Requirements Documents from Strategic Segment Managers into specific product requirements and R&D briefs
- Drive the long-term technology roadmap in close collaboration with R&D leadership — ensuring the portfolio maintains competitive and technical leadership in priority markets
- Voice of Customer & Market Intelligence
- Build and maintain a structured VOC programme for the product segment focused on requirements validation, competitive intelligence, and pricing research
- Monitor the competitive landscape continuously — new instrument introductions, pricing moves, partnership activity — and translate intelligence into positioning and roadmap responses
- Pricing & Financial Performance
- Own global base pricing strategy for the product segment — setting, communicating, and periodically reviewing instrument and consumable pricing with VP Product Line approval
- Manage the product segment's P&L contribution in partnership with the VP — tracking revenue, gross margin, and portfolio profitability against AOP targets
- Support AOP planning with NPI revenue projections, volume forecasts, and portfolio investment requirements
- Cross-functional Collaboration
- Partner with the VP Product Line on portfolio investment prioritisation, AOP planning, and executive gate reviews
- Work closely with R&D to translate commercial requirements into technically feasible product specifications, maintaining a clear PM/R&D boundary
- Collaborate with the Sr. Director, Strategic & Commercial Marketing to ensure segment intelligence inputs are incorporated into roadmap and positioning decisions
- Engage with Regional Product Managers to ensure field market intelligence is incorporated into product and launch planning
- Commercial Readiness Ownership
- Own the commercial readiness workstream for the assigned NPI programme — defining what 'launch-ready' means commercially and driving the organisation to achieve it
- Develop and maintain the NPI commercial launch plan: pricing strategy, target customer profiles, positioning framework, competitive differentiation, channel and regional launch sequencing, and sales readiness milestones
- Set and own launch pricing — building the pricing model from market research, customer willingness-to-pay data, competitive benchmarking, and lifecycle revenue objectives; seeking approval through the VP Product Line
- Define and track commercial readiness gate criteria for each NPI stage gate — ensuring commercial preparation keeps pace with technical development and that the launch team never arrives at gate approval without a complete commercial plan
- Own the Market Requirements Document (MRD) for the assigned NPI — working with the Strategic Segment Manager and conducting independent VOC to ensure requirements are grounded in customer evidence, not internal assumption
- Translate MRD requirements into a clear Product Requirements Document (PRD) that R&D can act on — making explicit priority trade-offs between must-have and nice-to-have requirements
- Serve as the primary commercial interface to the R&D programme team — attending technical reviews, raising commercial risk flags early, and negotiating feature/schedule trade-offs with the VP Product Line's backing
- Monitor competitive landscape throughout the programme — tracking competitive instrument releases, pricing moves, and application developments that affect the NPI's positioning assumptions
- Voice of Customer & Validation
- Design and lead the NPI VOC programme to ensure active development, structured around requirements validation, concept testing, and pricing research
- Manage beta customer relationships from site selection through beta completion — ensuring beta programmes generate evidence-based feedback, not goodwill gestures
- Translate VOC findings into actionable programme recommendations: feature priority changes, pricing adjustments, positioning refinements, or competitive response requirements
- Launch Execution & Field Readiness
- Own the commercial launch plan — coordinating across Applications Science, MarComm, Regional Marketing, Sales, and Service to ensure every function is launch-ready on day one
- Develop the commercial launch toolkit: product brief, competitive battlecard, value proposition messaging, demo guide, and objection-handling resource for the field commercial team
- Deliver product and application training to the sales and service organisation pre-launch — ensuring commercial teams can demonstrate, position, and close against competitive alternatives
- Monitor post-launch commercial KPIs during the ramp period — order intake, revenue, competitive win rate, and pricing realisation — and lead corrective action where ramp performance lags plan
- Programme Collaboration
- Attend and actively contribute to NPI programme reviews, stage-gate meetings, and executive steering committee briefings — representing the commercial perspective at every programme milestone
- Partner with the Applications Scientist to develop the application note and proof-of-performance content roadmap that supports the NPI launch and early ramp
- Handoff the NPI to the Strategic PM and Operations PM at commercial launch — providing full product, pricing, and market documentation, and supporting a clean transition of ongoing portfolio management responsibility
- Pricing Administration
- Administer and maintain the product line price book — updating pricing in systems, managing price exception tracking, and preparing periodic price review data for the Strategic PM's approval
- Support periodic list price review cycles: gathering competitive pricing data, preparing margin analysis, and coordinating system updates following approved changes
- Process special pricing requests within delegated authority limits; escalate above-threshold requests to the Strategic PM with supporting data
- Quality & Supply Chain Support
- Serve as the first point of triage for field quality escalations and supply chain issues — gathering information, routing to the appropriate owner (Quality, Manufacturing, Supply Chain), and tracking resolution to closure
- Maintain live escalation tracker for the product line; provide regular status updates to the Strategic PM and VP Product Line
- Coordinate with Operations and Supply Chain on parts availability, lead times, and backlog — communicating timeline impacts to commercial stakeholders
- Commercial Operations Support
- Support the sales organisation with product configuration guidance, compatibility questions, and order-specific queries that require product management input
- Maintain and update competitive comparison resources, product FAQs, and technical specification sheets as product and competitive information evolves
- Track key product line KPIs — order intake, backlog, inventory, and field feedback — and provide regular reporting to the Strategic PM
- Support NPI launches with operational readiness tasks: SAP setup, price book entry, configuration guide development, and sales team resource publication
Requirements
- Required
- 10–15+ years of experience in product management, product strategy, or commercial leadership in analytical instrumentation or scientific equipment
- Demonstrated experience owning a product roadmap and leading NPI programmes through full commercialisation
- Direct technical knowledge of the relevant product segment (e.g., atomic spectroscopy, chromatography, materials characterisation) and its key application markets
- Strong financial acumen — experience managing product line P&L, building NPI business cases, and setting pricing strategy
- Proven track record of leading and developing small product management teams
- Ability to travel 25–30% for customer visits, conferences, and internal reviews
- Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Engineering, or a related scientific discipline
- Advanced degree (MSc, PhD) in a relevant scientific discipline
- Experience in a structured stage-gate NPI environment
- Experience working in a matrixed organisation alongside segment marketing, technical, and regional commercial functions
- Strong executive presence — ability to present product investment decisions clearly to senior leadership and major customers
