Job description

• This role is responsible for the overall design of security systems projects, including access control, CCTV/video surveillance, intrusion detection, fire/life-safety interfaces, networking, power, pathways, and related low-voltage system components. The role works closely with sales, project management, operations, field personnel, customers, engineers, IT stakeholders, and other trades to incorporate project requirements and develop complete, coordinated security system designs. This role supports submittals, bill of materials development, redlines, as-builts, and design updates throughout the project lifecycle. Previous work experience with electronic safety and security systems, low-voltage construction, system integration, and drafting is helpful in order to succeed in this position. Contributes to the desired safety and work culture of the organization.

Responsibilities

• Confer with engineering, marketing, production, or sales departments, or with customers, to establish and evaluate design concepts, designs, and operational plans.
• Meet with customers, project teams, specialists, and stakeholders to confirm security system intent, owner standards, access control requirements, camera coverage, alarm points, fire/life-safety interfaces, network needs, and project scope before design development.
• Produce electrical, electronic, or mechanical drawings, sketches, blueprints, and/or engineering instructions for assembly, or other related documents or graphics necessary for security design.
• Translate security drawings into design specifications
• Examine project plans, specifications, door schedules, reflected ceiling plans, network standards, estimates, take-off sheets, and owner requirements to design effective and coordinated security systems.
• Consult with engineers to ensure that security equipment or systems meet design specifications.
• Maintains close contact with system specialist personnel and, depending on location, respond to material needs as they arise.
• Modify, refine, or update designs to conform with customer specifications, production limitations, I/O on controller, or changes in design trends as needed.
• Update device layouts, risers, point lists, camera schedules, access control point lists, intrusion zone lists, and security system design documents based on field changes and approved scope revisions.
• Stay current with security system technology, networked devices, video platforms, access control panels, intrusion systems, fire/life-safety interfaces, licensing, cabling, power, and integration requirements.
• Research security equipment and related component needs, sources, competitive prices, delivery times, licensing requirements, compatibility, and ongoing operational costs.
• Select access control, CCTV/video surveillance, intrusion detection, fire interface, network, power, cabling, and field device components that meet project specifications and functional requirements.
• May prepare material lists, coordinate substitutions, confirm product compatibility, and submit purchase requests for outside material.
• Present designs, submittals, reports, device layouts, and system concepts to customers, engineers, project teams, and other stakeholders for review and approval.
• Independently and proactively resolves conflicts, questions, and coordination gaps involving doors, power, network, pathways, fire/life-safety interfaces, ceiling conditions, device locations, and owner standards before final system designs are issued.
• May respond to Requests for Information (RFIs), support design clarifications, and help customers or engineers understand security system functionality, limitations, and project impacts.
• Prepares completed job documentation, including submittals, device schedules, risers, bill of materials, cable schedules, installation details, programming requirements, commissioning documents, and closeout documents that meet contract requirements.
• Generate security system input/output summaries, door hardware coordination notes, camera schedules, access control point lists, intrusion zone lists, and related design records.
• Document changes in material, equipment, device locations, network requirements, system configuration, and field conditions.
• Interpret change order requests and take necessary design action to support project completion, accurate pricing, and final documentation.
• Instruct individuals on how to properly and efficiently operate technical tools and equipment.
• Help individuals understand how to affectively implement ideas.
• Guide individuals through the work day to assist with any needed tasks.
• Suggest new ways of doing or thinking about tasks to improve efficiency and/or quality of work.

Requirements

• Previous work experience with electronic safety and security systems, low-voltage construction, system integration, and drafting is helpful in order to succeed in this position.
